As some of you may know, I’ve recently launched a new business venture, HATTORI CLAN DOJO, and with that came the motto, “Pay Yourself First.” The term was first introduced to me a few years back from Robert Kiyosaki, specifically referring to finance (which I will include in this article) but… “From one thing, know 10,000 things,” therefore I’d like to expand the concept of Pay Yourself First into a few more areas of life. So without holding you back any longer, here’s 3 Ways to Start Paying Yourself First:
Wake Up Earlier
Personally, this one is the hardest for me… but here’s why waking up earlier is key to paying yourself first. When you wake up earlier, you get more time to get yourself together in the morning before “the world” starts demanding your time and energy. Your mind is at it’s best after good rest so why not use that power for your own goals? Let’s say you’ve been meaning to work on a project- Well, wake up an hour earlier every day and put some time into it. You’d be surprised at how much you can get done in the morning when you wake up early. The earlier the better. Here’s a list of other things you can do in the morning by waking up earlier.
- Check accounts/emails
- Practice languages
- Cook/eat a healthy breakfast
When it comes to finances, paying yourself first literally means paying yourself first. Whenever you get paid, take a small percentage of that and save it- preferably in a place where you can’t easily touch it. With that being said, a savings account at a bank or credit union is a great place for that. If you don’t have an account -which you should consider getting- then a nike shoebox or a mattress will work just fine.
One main key is to start with a percentage that won’t damage your current way of life. I suggest 5% or 10%. Too many people think they’re going to “save a whole check.” Thing about that is… if you haven’t been saving whole checks before, you’re not going to magically start all of a sudden.
The last step is to take the percentage and have it directly deposited into that account. I know, seems simple enough but how many people actually do it? Another key point is to not have an atm or debit card for this account. Make yourself save. Give yourself some time and you’ll be happily surprised at how much you can save through automation.
Reach Out to Friends and Loved Ones
I’m going to be 100% transparent with you all. This may be the one that I struggle with the most- but I’m working on it. Here’s the thing with reaching out to loved ones… you’re always glad that you did. Notice, I said loved ones though, that doesn’t include the family members or people you have the whole love/hate thing with… thats some else… I’m talking about those great friends that you had nothing but good times with but life just got the better of your time. Hey- life’s short… and everyones time to go is different… so check in with people from time to time, never know who may need a good friend…
So hey, like I said in the beginning, I’ve launched a brand, HATTORI CLAN DOJO, and I’m still working on it daily. However, I do have a few pieces of merchandise that I designed with the motto Pay Yourself First on them. Check em out below, You can buy them…. Let me know what you think. Thank you for reading my ramblings… till next time
